Newly opened to a hail of fanfare in 2013, this large resort is a level or two up from its many Italian competitors. The rooms, large and furnished to a high standard, all look down the hill to the sea. The dining options at Hideaway are numerous, ranging from standard by-the-pool lunch to African game meat. As one would expect from a 5* resort,it has a big pool and an even bigger spa. Being a large resort, it is not to everyones taste but it successfully fills a gap between the many enormous (and often terrible) large resorts and Baraza/The Residence.
Hideaway of Nungwi Resort and Spa - The Facts
This resort is one of
Zanzibars newest properties. It sits on the Western side of the island's Northernmost tip in an area already occupied by many large resorts. They are here because the best beaches are here. They are not as private as other areas and they still suffer from Zanzibarss tides but they ae largely beautiful white sandy affairs.
Being a large resort, you could often be forgiven for thinking you are anywhere in the world. To confuse you, the decoration in the rooms is in mainly Asian but not over the top as in many of Zanzibars bigger properties. Ignoring the exclusive VIP area the Hideaway is a largely tasteful and fairly well spaced hotel. The grounds are beautifully maintained and all rooms look down the gardens and onto the sea.
The obligatory buffet is good but if guests want something a little more exciting there are several restaurant options ranging from Japanese to African game meat. The spa and dive centre are as you would expect - each offers a full range of services and has excellent equipment.
The Hideaway has 100 rooms and should not be considered alongside Baraza or The Residence but it has managed to raise itself above the myriad large hotels on the island. It is a good resort. For
honeymoons we do prefer the smaller lodges.
