Kimondo Camp - The Facts
Kimondo camp follows the migration from north to south, skipping out locations in the centre or west of the
Serengeti to focus on great locations in the two main areas: Ndutu and Lamai.
From June to October Kimdono is situated on the northern side of the Mara River, the opposite to sister camp Olakira, on the Lamai Wedge. The benefit to this area is that you have fewer vehicles for river crossings making your sightings more secluded and private. The river is just a 15 minute drive away making it a perfect location for catching some of these adrenaline-pumping crossings.
In the south Kimondo is located just south west of Ndutu. There are very few camps further west, allowing for a sense of privacy in what tends to be a busy area. The best time to visit Ndutu is in the month of February. Here is where the wildebeest congregate in their largest numbers and 8,000 calves are born per day. Predator-prey interactions are also at their highest making for some excellent photographic opportunities.
The eight tented rooms are your classic, relatively luxurious mobile tents. Each comes with flushing toilet and a sink with taps – quite unbelievable when you consider the location. The main area consists of a mess tent where delicious meals are eaten communally and a second lounge area for sitting back and relaxing with a well earned drink to discuss the day’s sightings.
As with all Asilia properties, Kimondo offers a very high quality all round
safari experience. The guides are passionate and engaging, the vehicles are open-sided and the atmosphere in camp is geared towards great game viewing with a back drop of understated luxury. The service and hospitality offered by warm and wecloming staff makes you feel at home straight away.
Although the camp doesn’t provide the chance to see the migration year-round, from December to March and approximately mid-June to October it’s one of the best places to be.
Combining Kimondo with some of Asilia's other properties is a must. A typical Northern Tanzania itinerary would see you explore the Ngorongoro Crater for a few nights after an overnight in Arusha. Staying at Asilia's Highlands would provide you with the must oppulent and unqiue stays in the area. The bubble shaped rooms located on the side of the Olmoti Volcano offer excellent views. The Highlands is one of the only lodges in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where we would recommend the possibility of staying three nights as there is so much to do.
When visiting Kimondo, the migration should be your main point of interest, so why not then also combine it with Asilia's Namiri Plains. For some of the best big cat sightings, especially of cheetah, this area of the Serengeti recently opened up for tourists and provides and experience that is hard to beat.
