Our View

The Ruaha River Lodge is the cheapest accommodation in Ruaha National Park, which actually offers a good value stay. The setting is exceptional, right on the banks of the Ruaha river and the backdrop with the rolling hills is great. The only drawback is that the lodge is quite big and isn’t and build out of brick and stone. But that aside, it offers a great location and exceptional value. We do believe that a little extra money to stay at Mdonya Old River Camp is worth the upgrade for a better all-round experience.

The Ruaha River Lodge - The Facts

The Ruaha River Lodge is located about 30 minutes game drive away from the Msembe airstrip. The lodge sits proudly on the banks of the Ruaha river in southern Ruaha National Park.

The main area of the lodge is split into two parts. The main reception and entrance area is set just back from the riverbank in a huge open sided structure with a large makuti roof. There are sofas, armchairs and coffee tables here to relax and enjoy the view of the river. The main restaurant is also to one side under the same structure.

The other communal area is set apart, completely on the other side of the lodge, but high up on a rocky kopjie that looks down onto the river with exceptional views out over the bush. The structure is built in and around the rocks, with a big bar and various decking areas to admire the scenery. Meals also take place here.

The rooms are all dotted along the river bank with surprisingly good space between each one. They are all made out of brick and stone with makuti roofs and have a well sized veranda. The rooms are very spacious, and 24 of them can be made into triples. The bathrooms are quite alternative and boast a typical African theme. A very popular Tanzania Safari with families.

Day game drives take place here in open sided vehicles.

5 out of 5 for the guide. 4 out of 5 for food and while I didn't like the lodge as much as I liked the tent, I am glad that we chose two such different styles of accommodation. Our room (banda) was quite nice and I enjoyed having so much space to spread out in. I also loved the porch and all of the animals you could watch from your own front door. However, the whole resort had a bit of an odd... maybe slightly neglected feel. The upper dining area had a gorgeous lookout, but it was strange to have it sit empty while we were there. It felt almost forgotten. Not a big deal at all, but it gave a less cohesive feel to the camp.
