Our ranking is subjective (it is the office consensus, after much arguing), and tries to reflect value for money as well as overall quality. Therefore we may award just three stars to a 'five star' Zanzibar Hotel in the hotel tick-box sense, or five stars to a superb, unashamed 'three star' Tanzania Lodge that consistently provides superb quality experiences for the price. We care a great deal about location, whether in the bush or on the beach, and in many cases this has influenced our choice. It is unorthodox, it may seem at odds with the world view, but we can explain... and we urge you to call us to discuss!
We don't just know Tanzania!
For more information on Tanzania, the best thing to do is to give us a ring for an impartial chat. Although we love Tanzania, we also love the rest of Africa too and have experts in all the main safari countries. Nasikia’s migration camp is a no-frills, mobile camp that takes up two of the prime locations in order to catch the best of the wildebeest migration. Whilst the camp does not offer any opulence, it does what it says on the tin and offers a perfect base in which to explore the Serengeti’s best spots for catching the thundering herds of wildebeest as they run the gauntlet of crossing the Mara River, or whilst thousands of calves are born on the short, grassy plains. Our View
Tarangire is the most under-appreciated parks in Northern Tanzania. Ndovu Camp is located deep into the park and provides and excellent value, luxury safari option where guests can enjoy excellent game viewing and the comforts of a great lodge. With most guests only visiting the very Northern reaches of the park, staying closer to the central regions, away from these areas, is key to getting the best out of Tarangire.
Nduara Loliondo is run by Nomad Tanzania who have camps and lodges all over Tanzania. This is one of their less commercial products; located outside the Serengeti Border in the Loliondo area, where you get game and also a cultural aspect - this is the land of the Masaai. We love the style of ‘yurt’ tents and opportunity to take long walking safaris in the wilderness.
Our View
We really like Ndutu Lodge for two reasons, its location and its simplicity; ok this place is not going to blow you away but from the December to March time when the herds are in this area its is the best value permanent lodge in the whole area. For this reason, especially in February time this lodge gets very booked up. This is a ‘drive in’ lodge which requires to bring your own vehicle and guide from Arusha which also means that this lodge can get booked up by the mass market safari companies.- R Nelson

Since there is not a wide variety of choice on the crater rim the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge is an excellent option; good access into the crater whilst remaining quite affordable. Being a large hotel it doesn’t have all the charm you would expect of a lodge in a world famous location. But why should it when you are only here for only a night or two and the focus is the crater itself, not the lodge, its design and aesthetics. This is a good choice of lodge for the rim but if you are looking for something with a bit more charm and slightly less expensive, then look at somewhere like Plantation Lodge in the highlands. Or if you want one of Africa’s most sought after property and budget is no problem, the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge. The Ocean Suite is an exclusive private suite run by the Ras Nungwi beach hotel. The private house has its own private steps down to the beach, just to the side of the main hotel. One of the best suites on the island, complete with private plunge pool, great privacy and lots of space.
