This page is a comprehensive list of all the Tanzania lodges and Zanzibar hotels featured on this website.
It is very hard to rank lodges with one simple measure! But we have tried, and herewith an explanation of our system.

Our ranking is subjective (it is the office consensus, after much arguing), and tries to reflect value for money as well as overall quality. Therefore we may award just three stars to a 'five star' Zanzibar Hotel in the hotel tick-box sense, or five stars to a superb, unashamed 'three star' Tanzania Lodge that consistently provides superb quality experiences for the price.  We care a great deal about location, whether in the bush or on the beach, and in many cases this has influenced our choice. It is unorthodox, it may seem at odds with the world view, but we can explain... and we urge you to call us to discuss!

We don't just know Tanzania!

For more information on Tanzania, the best thing to do is to give us a ring for an impartial chat. Although we love Tanzania, we also love the rest of Africa too and have experts in all the main safari countries. If you are undecided as to where to visit, please do just drop us an email or give us a call!

236 Hurumzi - Zanzibar, Stone Town

Our View

236 Hurumzi Hotel used to be the place to stay in Stone Town, but a long time ago.  It has since been superseded by much nicer offerings

This was a mobile tent. Far nicer than we expected. Staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. Food was very good. A great experience. Could easily have stayed longer.

Amani Beach Club - Tanzania Mainland

    Our View

Amani Beach Club is located on the main land coast of Tanzania just south of the commercial capital Dar es Salaam. This is a very good value beach hotel on a remote coast. It is mostly used by ex pats from Dar es Salaam who drive down here for the weekend to get away from the busy streets of Dar. We rarely use this hotel as just down the beach is one of our favourite beach lodges in Tanzania- Ras Kutani. This is more expensive but we do feel it’s really worth it

Anna of Zanzibar - Zanzibar, East Coast

    Our View

Anna of Zanzibar is a small, personal and homely beach lodge with a fantastic beach. It is a vibrant and well run option that provides a good option for those wanting to enjoy the south-eastern beaches without going to the bigger resorts. It is one of the few mis-priced options on Zanzibar that is genuinely good value.

Overall, absolutely fantastic property with a lovely, caring manager. The villas are huge(!) and the whole thing feels very personal and exclusive due to the maximum capacity of 12 guests in total. Beautiful private beach and great sun loungers, which we used all day. The amount and quality of food was great overall, you should be keen in sea food though, which we both luckily are. The waiting staff were all super friendly, but sometimes things took a little long to arrive (milk for coffee, coffee refill, olive oil etc.), however that should improve the longer they work there.

The one thing that takes off 0.5 points is the fact that our villa was right next to a building site where they are building more villas. We were warned before by the manager that we should let her know if there is noise during the day, but ultimately this meant that we never stayed on our terrace, as completely silent building work just does not exist. One night, we there was loud hammering until 8pm which made it impossible to relax in the villa and it was the managers day off, and the other staff needed us to come up to them to alert them of the noise although it was clearly noticeable everywhere and the builders knew there were guests staying next door... Our complaint was handled with the upmost professionality by the manager the next day and we received free massages in the Baraza Spa and one night off, as she was very sorry that it dampened an otherwise fantastic stay.

    Asilia Highlands - Ngorongoro Highlands

The Highlands is Asilia's newest project, and a very exciting one at that. The Ngorongoro area has been sorely lacking lacking any camps operated for true safari enthusiasts, and this fills the gap. The fascinatingly unique design blends well with the surrounding environment and creates a feeling of real luxury.

    Azura Selous - Selous
    Azura Selous is currently closed.
Previously known as Amara Selous, Azura Selous has become a transformed lodge under the luxury brand Azura. Located on the western part of the Selous, and despite not being famous for its game viewing as it was a hunting block until 2005, it has increased in abundance since and has also become renowed for photography.  When visiting the lodge we certainly felt the accommodation was of a high standard, with the bonus of air conditioning (one of the only camps with this in Selous) and the rooms being constructed with both canvas and stone look out onto the Ruaha River.

    Baraza - Zanzibar, East Coast
The staff at Baraza also went over and above to make sure that our time there was relaxing and enjoyable.  In particular, the beach lunch was a wonderful treat.  The experience at Baraza was a great taste of luxury after “roughing it” on safari. - B Auger

Bawe Island - 15 minutes boat from Stone Town

    Our View

Opened on 1st June 2024, Bawe Island is simply magnificent - but this level of Indian Ocean opulence comes at a hefty price tag. Set on 90 hectares of land off the coast of Zanzibar, Bawe is the ultimate stay in the region, bar only the exclusive Mnemba Island which offers a more barefoot experience. While it won’t give you safari-style intimacy, this hotel gives unparalleled luxury, if that’s your bag.
